The ASSP offers graduate (masters) and PhD level courses. The courses in spring form one full semester (30 ECTS). Applicants applying for a full semester are given priority, however, it is possible to apply for single courses. Master’s student Christian Detsch has completed his MSc in Marine Biology at the University of Bremen with a thesis investigating the trophic role of the arrow worm Parasagitta elegans in contrasting sub-Arctic fjord systems of West Greenland. Conducted in collaboration with the Greenland Climate Research Centre, the project provides new insights into how climate-driven changes in glacier influence can alter marine food webs.
The study was based on fieldwork carried out during the 21st annual spring MarineBasis-Nuuk monitoring cruise aboard R/V Sanna, where biological, hydrographic and biogeochemical samples were collected from the fjords Nuup Kangerlua and Ameralik. Using stable isotope and fatty acid analyses, the thesis demonstrates that P. elegans occupies different trophic roles in fjords influenced by land-terminating and marine-terminating glaciers, highlighting how ongoing glacier retreat may reshape Arctic ecosystem structure and energy transfer.

During his time at the Greenland Climate Research Centre, Christian contributed to several joint institute research cruises and participated in long-term marine ecosystem monitoring activities. In addition to his thesis research, he worked with time series analyses from the MarineBasis-Nuuk programme, part of the Greenland Ecosystem Monitoring (GEM) programme (www.g-e-m.dk), supporting efforts to understand long-term changes in Greenland’s coastal marine ecosystems.
Christian’s work contributes to ongoing research on Arctic ecosystem responses to climate change and strengthens the long-term observational and collaborative research activities at the Greenland Climate Research Centre and the Greenland Ecosystem Monitoring (GEM) programme.
